MICHELLE OBAMA and Meghan Markle met privately after the sold-out Becoming book event held at London’s Southbank Centre last night.

Kensington Palace has confirmed that Markle attended Obama’s highly-anticipated event in conversation with author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, one of several dates of her Becoming book tour, in a private capacity.

Both the former US first lady and the Duchess of Sussex are passionate champions of girls’ education, something that they discussed last night, the Evening Standard has reported.

Obama used her platform as first lady to advocate for the cause and has continued to do so since and Markle has spoken out about its importance for her personally and for young women around the world.

During her royal tour of Australia, Fiji, Tonga and New Zealand in October, the Duchess delivered a speech in which she announced two new grants for students at the Fiji National University.

She said: “Everyone should be afforded the opportunity to receive the education they want, but more importantly the education they have the right to receive. And for women and girls in developing countries, this is vital.”

Markle also spoke about how scholarships and financial aid programmes had enabled her to fund her university tuition.

As well as talking about making a difference around the world, the pair also reportedly spoke about pregnancy and raising children.

Speaking to Good Housekeeping ahead of their meeting, Obama shared some advice for Markle.

She said: “My biggest piece of advice would be to take some time and don’t be in a hurry to do anything. I spent the first few months in the White House mainly worrying about my daughters, making sure they were off to a good start at school and making new friends before I launched into any more ambitious work. I think it’s okay – it’s good, even – to do that.”

“What I’d say is that there’s so much opportunity to do good with a platform like that – and I think Meghan can maximise her impact for others, as well her own happiness, if she’s doing something that resonates with her personally,” she added.

Barack Obama and Prince Harry have developed a friendship over the years.

The Duke of Sussex interviewed the former US president last year during his stint as the guest editor on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.
