Welterweight Jerome Wilson still in hospital after Sheffield bout
BOXER JEROME Wilson remains in a stable but critical condition after a life-saving brain operation following his fight with Serge Ambomo on September 12.
The welterweight bout was stopped in the sixth round after he was knocked out at the Ice Arena in his hometown of Sheffield. The 29-year-old was then carried from the ring on a stretcher after sustaining a serious head injury.
A statement from his promoter, David Coldwell said: “Jerome Wilson unfortunately suffered a severe head injury during his fight in Sheffield
“He is receiving the best possible care and while he receives treatment Jerome’s family request privacy at this difficult time.
Further updates will be released when Jerome’s family feel it is appropriate to do so, therefore no further comment will be made until directed by Jerome’s family.”
It was a re-match against Ambomo, who had won on points in their first meeting in May. It was the Cameroon fighter’s trainer Glyn Rhodes who put Wilson in the recovery position after realising he was seriously hurt.
Prior to Friday’s fight, Wilson had won eight of his ten fights in his four year career.
