NUMBER ONE: Lewis Hamilton clutches his trophy after winning the final race of the season

A SPOOF video with Hollywood legend Will Smith, his 83rd career pole followed up with his 11th win of the season – Lewis Hamilton signed off the 2018 Formula One season in style in Abu Dhabi last weekend, and warned his peers it’ll be the same again next year.

Having already secured the drivers’ and constructors’ titles earlier in the season, the nal race saw more drama in the Nico Hülkenburg opening lap barrel roll than at the front, where Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen finished in second and third place respectively behind Hamilton.

Thankfully the Renault driver was OK. The win for Hamilton meant the five-time F1 champion became the first ever driver to break the 400-point barrier, an indication of the imperious nature of his performances throughout the season.

Saluting his team, the Stevenage-born racer said: “A big, big thank you to Mercedes and all of the team, all of the sporting partners. We wouldn’t have had this championship without them.” He added: “I really wanted to end the season strong, and I think on a personal note, I was able to do that.

“On the other side, the team did an exceptional job all year long, and I really wanted, race on, race off, to deliver for them and wanted to end the way that I plan to start next year.

“That was kind of the new psyche. So it’s been a really strong weekend, which I’m really happy with.”

Hamilton says he will be relaxing in his down time away from the sport this winter – an important aspect of his preparation for next season.

“I haven’t made any plans yet – but [I am] looking forward to family time. Unfortunately, I still have a lot of work to do until mid-December sometime – but [I’m] excited for the winter, [the] winter break and just getting time to spend with my sister and the kids and my mum and my dad.

“The whole switch-off thing. The seasons are getting long- er and longer, so the importance of that period is getting more and more important.”
