Though it’s too early to handicap “War Horse’s” Academy Award chances, Steven Spielberg’s movie got an impressive royal seal of approval Sunday from Kate Middleton.

On the eve of her 30th birthday, the Duchess of Cambridge joined her husband, Prince William, at the London premiere of the Oscar darkhorse in a stunning Alice Temperley full-length evening gown that made her look like she stepped out of a classic Hollywood picture.

Once the lights went down inside the Odeon Leicester Square, however, Middleton let her guard down and was spied tearing up by Spielberg.

“I was sitting next to her and all I know is at one point my wife, who was sitting to my right, right in front of my face she passed a Kleenex,” the director told “BBC Breakfast” Monday morning. “I saw the Kleenex go across my face, arrive and stop but I didn’t want to intrude on her experience watching ‘War Horse’ so I never glanced over.”

It marked a star-studded evening for the notoriously shy Duchess, who got to hobknob with the film’s stars including Tom Hiddleston, Emily Watson and Benedict Cumberbatch, fresh off his casting in “Star Trek.”

“I am so honored that the Duke and Duchess have chosen this for their first royal film premiere,” Michael Morpurgo, who wrote the children’s book on which “War Horse” is based, told London’s Daily Mail. “She is such a beautiful young woman, so full of dignity. I am going to send her a copy of the book for her birthday.”

Six hundred military veterans and their families were also invited to the premiere, as part of military charities supported by Prince William and Prince Harry.

Middleton is spending her milestone birthday, though, in far less public fashion: Palace officials said her birthday celebration will be a “low-key and private.”
