Siasia rues for change in Eagles
Outwardly, Nigerian officials expressed disappointment that the much talked about match with Ghana did not hold.
But could this be true of their inner feelings.
In as much as one may avoid being emphatic on this, there were indications that the calling off of the match was a huge relief to them going by the poor response of their top players. About seven of them failed to turn up and there was fear of another humiliation by Ghana.
The last time Nigeria played Ghana in a friendly, a 4-1 humiliation was their story and they didn’t want another such defeat.
Coach Samson Siasia, before getting to London, was optimistic about a good outing. But when some of the players he expected to use failed to show up he became moody and one couldn’t weigh his optimism anymore.
“This assignment is making me to know the players more. That is one good thing about this trip,” he said while lamenting the attitude of the players.
“Another good thing is that a lot is being revealed in a friendly. We have to put our acts together and make sure it doesn’t happen any more especially in competitive assignments. This is the lesson we are going home with. We hope that they can fix the match in a later date.
I’ll prefer to play as many games as possible as we are building a team and need to win and lose matches so that we can learn from them, Siasia said, this time appearing authoritative that the initial despair he had shown.
Ghanaians players and their fans were very disappointed that the friendly could not hold as they were determined to confirm their superiority over Nigeria. The match that could have given weight to their claim did not eventually hold.
