A 14-year old pupil who stabbed a Nigerian-born British science teacher, Vincent Uzomah, in the stomach at the beginning of a science class at Dixons Kings Academy, Bradford, on June 11, will today appear at Bradford Crown Court, charged with attempted murder.
The boy who cannot be named for legal reasons, as he is a child, also faces a lesser charge of cannabis possession .
A Bradford Crown Court official told The Guardian at the weekend that “it’s a preliminary hearing at this stage” and that “it will not last more than five or ten minutes.” Prior to today’s hearing, the murder suspect had appeared before a Magistrate at Bradford and Keighley Youth Court, on June 13, where his case was subsequently transferred to the Crown Court for today.
The 50-year old Uzomah, who continues to receive more prayers and goodwill messages from well wishers on his facebook page, had on Tuesday last week spoken for the first time since the attempt on his life. In a statement released through the police, he thanked God and medics who saved his life. “I wish to express my heartfelt gratitude to God and to everyone for all the support that myself and family have received during the course of the traumatic event of my life. It has been 12 days since this event occurred and I thank the Lord Jesus for sparing my life.
“I further wish to take this opportunity to thank all the doctors and nurses, in fact all the healthcare professionals that worked so hard to ensure that I am still here today. I have always heard and read that NHS – National Health Service – is a first class service, and now I have experienced it . Thank God for the NHS.
