World Archery Federation

Nigeria has formally been re admitted as a full member of the World Archery Federation (WAF).

In a letter addressed to the Nigeria Archery Federation (NAFED), dated 3rd April, 2012 in Lausanne, Switzerland and signed by the World Archery Federation Secretary-General Mr. Tom Dielen, WAF declared that “Since no objection was raised within 60 days of the announcement by NAFED requesting membership, by consequence Nigeria is now a member of the World Archery Federation. Congratulation and welcome”!.

As a World Archery Member Nigeria Archery Federation is eligible to take part in any world archery tournaments.

The letter also stated that during the next congress slated for Lausanne, Switzerland in 2013, Nigeria’s formal application for a permanent membership will be put to vote.

The Nigeria Archery Federation under the  protem Presidency of veteran sports journalist and sports administrator Felix Okugbe has as its protem Secretary General Mr Gbenga Boluji while other protem executive members are Mr. Bola Orodele, Frank Ilaboya, Izekor Lucky, Adeleke Badmus, Lucky Tom Oniovo, Mrs. Temilola Adesina, Bayo Lawason, Mr. Toyin Ibitoye and Mr. Akala Olawale.

Nigeria Archery Federation has communicated this development to the Nigeria Olympic Committee(NOC) and the National Sports Commission(NSC).

As you may be aware archery is a long standing medal event from the second Modern Olympic Games held in Paris in 1900 and the main objective of the Nigeria Archery Federation is to develop the game in Nigeria as well as produce Olympic standard Archers by the next Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro Brazil, in 2016.

To this end the Nigeria Archery Federation has started developing facilities in Abeokuta, Abuja, Lagos and Benin City for the training of Archery Coaches and the development of  young Archers using secondary schools and tertiary institutions as take off base.

The Nigeria School Sports Federation (NSSF) and the Nigeria University Games Association will also partner NAFED in this quest to develop archery in Nigeria.

Nigeria Archery Federation has opened email account nafednigeria@yahoo.com for all intending Archers to send  in their registration (Registration is free) while holiday camping in locations across the country will take place during the long summer holidays.

The game of archery is basically a target shooting event using both conventional, manual and electronic bows and arrows to shoot targets in various sizes and distance categories.

The formation of NAFED is another attempt by some patriotic Nigerians to help engage Nigerian youth positively as well as to promote archery as an international sport in Nigeria.
