COMEDY merchant, Opa Williams has finally opened up on why he is making the revolutionary move of bringing comedians from five African countries to rock Abuja for the May 1 edition of his premier comedy show, tagged: Covergence Of African Comedy Chiefs in Abuja.
“It’s fresh comedy, it’s revolutionary and it can only happen on Opa Williams’ Nite of a Thousand Laughs Extra show,” Williams said in a statement.
The May 1 show will feature wave-making comic acts from Nigeria, such as Bovi, Klint Da Drunk, Funnybone and Akpororo.
While Loyiso Gola is the hottest comedian in South Africa, Eric Omondi is locking things down in the comedy turf in Kenya even as Funnyface has Ghana in his comedic grip and Joshua is the king of stand up in Zimbabwe.
Music artistes for the Workers’ Day show has been carefully selected according to Williams. They are Brymo (Ara), Davido and Terry G. The show will go down at the Sheraton Hotel, Abuja beginning from 6pm.
“We have a mission in Abuja on May 1, and that is to ensure that Abuja residents laugh away their stress and thank God it’s a public holiday.
“That is the reason we are using Abuja as a test case after we had a successful experiment with the African comedy chiefs in Kenya and Uganda. Consequently, we have reprashed the May Day thus: ‘May Day, Workers’ Day, Labour Day, Funny Day, Happy Day, Abuja Day, Laughter Day, Nite of A Thousand Laughs Extra,” he said.
Williams said he decided to experiment with top comedians from African countries “because we have always been known for blazing the trail in the comedy industry and since comedy shows have turned to ‘see one, see all’ affair, we decided to rewrite the book of comedy according to Opa Williams.” Consequently, what Abuja people will see on that day “is better seen than imagined because as I sepak to you, Kenya and Uganda have not recovered from what they saw when African comedy chiefs converged in those countries.”
