United Nations Building

Federal government’s inability to fulfil its promise of providing an alternative office space for the United Nations staff in Nigeria three months after the bombing of the United Nation’s Building in Abuja is causing concern.

THISDAY learnt that the delay is not unconnected with the bureaucracy in the system as well as corruption.

It was discovered that while some locations have been secured, the “unusual demands” of some public servants and the refusal of agents to “play ball” has been causing the delay even as UN staff continue to suffer.

Said a source who does not want his name in print: “The UN and government representatives have inspected the place agreed on but suddenly government officials started pulling back, probably because their efforts to inflate the cost of the building failed.

“As a member of the global union, it behoves on the Nigerian Government at all times to protect the staff, and entire properties of the organisation. After three months, no befitting and safe accommodation has been provided for the entire UN staff. The humanitarian job of UN has been stalled and majority of its staff languishing at home. This calls for questions as to where our government places its priorities.

This is time for Mr. President to demonstrate without fear or favour that he mean business in lifting Nigeria from decadence to glory.”
