10th Nov 11 to 5th Jan 12
Covent Garden is embracing tradition this Christmas, making it the most festive neighbourhood in the West End. A hand-picked, British grown Christmas tree will light up the West Piazza, whilst a 15 foot topiary reindeer will be the centre piece of the East Piazza. Giant red baubles and mirror balls will fill the halls of the Market Building, and new festoon lighting will illuminate the arches from the 10 November.
Keeping the seasonal cheer, carol singing from some of London’s best-loved choirs will return to Covent Garden and the family favourite, live reindeer petting, will be taking place each Saturday from the 12 November. The locally loved Real Food Market will also be getting a Christmas makeover and from the 24 November will be open from Thursday – Saturday.
Known for delivering unique cultural experiences and firsts, Covent Garden has also partnered with award winning director and visual artist Martha Fiennes’ SLOimage to create ‘The Nativity’, the world’s first animated nativity-scene, to be displayed on the Piazza from Thursday 10 November. Completely self-generating the mesmerising technological art-work slowly changes, keeping viewers wondering as to what may happen next, who may become part of the narrative, whether it might rain or snow, or even transform into a magical night-time scene.
Situated in the heart of Covent Garden’s traffic-free shopping area, ‘The Nativity’ will be joined by a Christmas shopping extravaganza – ‘The Twelve Treats of Christmas.’ Running from 1-12 December the activity will be centred around a Snow Globe installation on the West Piazza.
