ABUJA, Nigeria (AP)—The Nigeria Football Federation says it will back Sepp
Blatter for re-election as FIFA President in next week’s vote because of his vow
to fight corruption.
The NFF said Wednesday that it had decided to support 13-year incumbent
Blatter for his pledge “to make the administration of the game more open and
fight corruption.”
Nigeria’s backing came shortly before Blatter’s challenger, Mohamed bin
Hammam of Qatar, was placed under investigation by FIFA’s ethics committee after
being accused of bribery in his campaign.
The 75-year-old Blatter has also received support from the Confederation of
African Football and four of Africa’s five regional federations, suggesting
fading support for bin Hammam in a continent where he was believed to have a
strong following.
