Nigerian Workers Deserve Better Pay

The Chairman, House Committee on Environment, Hon Uche Ekwunife, Wednesday said  Nigerian workers deserved a better pay package than they currently receive considering the rising cost of living.
Ekwunife said the legislature would continue to strengthen labour laws and ensure that these laws guarantee job security and better remuneration to the work force in Nigeria.

In a goodwill message to workers in commemoration of the May Day celebrations, the lawmaker said the worker’s day should be a moment for  sober reflection and stock taking rather than merriment.

“Workers, Day is not a day of rest but a day of stock taking and appraisal of one’s performance over the past one year. It is a day for setting of targets for the next one year.

“But it is very unfortunate that people see it as a day of rest and a day of visitation. It is a day of deep reflection on whether the pay we receive is commensurate with our level of productivity,” she said.

Ekwunife advised the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and its affiliate unions to use the opportunity of this year’s May Day to re-orientate their members and encourage them to increase their productivity.

She said the legislature would be encouraged to press for higher wages for workers when the workers demonstrate greater commitment to serve their respective organisations and the country.
