Gaiya, while speaking in Lagos, said that the committee has made its position known to the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Chief Patrick Ekeji.
“The National Stadium is a national edifice which cost over N60billion to build and we cannot allow such beautiful edifice built less than 10 years ago to go the way of others. We have other edifices like the one at Surulere, Lagos, which has today become a home for miscreants.
That was not the concept of having these facilities in place. So, we cannot allow the National Stadium in Abuja to go the way of the National Stadium in Lagos. We must make sure that the stadium (Abuja) remains a world-class which can host any game anytime and a place which every Nigerian will be proud of. We would as a matter of urgency ensure that the turf at the stadium become lush green again.
“Immediately after our visit to the stadium, I had the cause to call the Director General of the NSC, (Ekeji) and I told him that though, pending the release of official report on our visit to the stadium, it is expedient to let him know that we (members of the committee) were not pleased with what we we saw at the stadium in Abuja. I also said that whatever immediate action he could take to address the issue should be taken to save this country from the eyesore at the stadium.
“I want to believe that he (Ekeji) is working on it and that very soon, we would see the stadium in a better state different from the one we saw when we went on an inspection,” Gaiya said.
