The Rivers Commissioner for Sports, Fred Igwe, says the state is set for the National School Sports Festival (NSSF) holding in Port Harcourt later this month.

Igwe spoke on Friday, in Port Harcourt, while inaugurating the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the festival.

The commissioner, who doubles as the chairman of the LOC, said that the date for the opening of the event would be announced when the participants had completed registration.

According to him, the festival is aimed at “catching them young and developing future great sports men and women”.

“Our governor is very passionate about school sports; he wants to catch great sports men and women young.

“We, in this committee, are also people with special interest in sports; we cannot afford to fail,” he said.

The commissioner said that corporate organisations, such as GT Bank (GTB), Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Industrial and General Insurance (IGI) and Shell Nigeria had accepted to sponsor the festival.

He urged members of the committee to do everything within their powers to present the best National Schools Sports Festival to Nigerians.

Richard Ofuru, the committee’s secretary, thanked the commissioner for finding the members worthy to serve.

Ofuru, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, urged his colleagues to be proactive in discharging their duties.

“Let us join hands to give children a chance to develop their talents in sports,” he said.
