Axed Chelsea Doctor To Sue Jose Mourinho

Jose Mourinho will resist all calls to reinstate Eva Carneiro despite a huge backlash over Chelsea’s treatment of the team doctor.

Sportsmail understands the incident involving Carneiro and Eden Hazard during last Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Swansea at Stamford Bridge was not the first time the two had clashed but on Wednesday the pressure mounted on Mourinho because:

  • Owner Roman Abramovich said to be furious that Mourinho caused the controversy by criticising a senior employee on radio and television.
  • Club officials in crisis mode amid concerns that Carneiro is seeking both a public apology and legal advice with a view to possibly suing the club for constructive dismissal in what could become a high-profile employment tribunal.
  • The Premier League doctors’ group branding his treatment of Carneiro ‘unjust in the extreme’.
  • Another senior figure in sports medicine calling Mourinho’s behaviour ‘appalling’.

After being informed on Sunday that her role as the club’s first-team doctor was to be downgraded — she was informed she will no longer attend training sessions, games or enter the team hotel — Carneiro did not impress her employers at Stamford Bridge by thanking her supporters on Facebook.

But it will certainly not be lost on Abramovich, who has long been sensitive to bad PR for his football club, that days later the support for Carneiro remains as strong as the criticism for his manager.

Members of the Chelsea hierarchy were left stunned by Mourinho’s decision to use the media to be so highly critical of Carneiro and first-team physio Jon Fearn for taking to the field to treat Hazard during the 2-2 draw against Swansea on Saturday.

After Mourinho’s outburst, there was a mood within the club to put on a united front and move on, but Carneiro believed her professionalism had been publicly questioned and was in no need to back down.

This may not be the first time Mourinho has lost patience with an otherwise highly-regarded specialist in sports medicine, with the management of Diego Costa’s recurring hamstring injury thought to have been an area of contention last season.
