The 2014 edition of the Lagos Polo Tournament sponsored by GTBank will gallop off on Wednesday, with eight teams gunning for the Dansa Cup and six other teams battling for the Open Cup in the first weekend of the championship.

Before the tournament commences, however, Unity Polo will have taken on Bad Boys in a play-off contest on Tuesday to determine who completes Stream 1 in the Dansa Cup category. Ibadan A, Kano Titans/Ibah and Lagos Sao Polo complete the pool in Stream 1. Stream 2 has Kano Tripple K, Ibadan B, Lagos Bonhams and Lagos Valkyrie Polo.
In the Open Cup, Lagos Ashbert 98.1 will compete with Lagos Kashton/Lintex and Lagos Fifth Chukker in Stream 1, while the Stream 2 has Lagos Ironclad/ Taleveras, Lagos Shoreline and Lagos Ark/ Goodfellows.

The finals of both Cups, including the Beginners Cup, will hold on February 23 to complete the first weekend. Action will resume on February 26 with eight teams contesting for the Low Cup, while four others begin hostilities for the Majekodunmi Cup.

The finals of both events will hold on March 2. The Deputy Tournment Manager, Seyi Oyinlola, said the tournament will feature an improved format different from last year’s. “There are different sponsors responsible for different aspect of the tournment. There’ll be an improved quality of the social events after the competition because we’re expecting about 3,000 guests,” Oyinlola said.

Oil service company, Gasstocks Limited has entered into a strategic partnership with Port Harcourt Golf Club 1928 to sponsor the Hole Number 18 on the course. The deal will allow Gasstocks to position its brand and network with key stakeholders who play golf on one of Nigeria’s prime golf courses.

The Managing Director Emmanuel Ufuoma Okene, who  confirmed the latest development to THISDAY, said the sponsorship is the company’s own little way of supporting the club and giving back to the community where it operates.

Okene, who plays golf off 23- handicap and was a member of Nigerian contingent to last year’s MTN World Golfers Championship in Durban, said the company had already commenced branding after paying for the hole.
He said golfers who play Port Hacourt Golf Club will have a wonderful experience as they will discover the difference when they reach the par 4 18th hole.

‘’We are a quality driven and resilient company. And for that reason when we were given a choice of a hole sponsorship, we naturally felt the 18th will be synonymous with us, so it is significant.
Hole 18 is unique because when you finish here the next is the 19th. Again 18th is usually where you know the character of a good golfer because you are exhausted after playing 17 holes and here you have to prove yourself,’’ Okene said.
