NIGERIAN-BORN entrepreneur Dr Solomon Fubara who has supported ethnic minority businesses was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list.
Dr Solomon Fubara, who was honoured for his services to black and ethnic minority communities (BME), said he felt like he had won millions in the lottery.
The father-of-five has been instrumental in supporting and helping the BME community into small businesses and in developing and expanding community and voluntary agencies.
In 2006, he set up the African Caribbean Chamber of Commerce, which under his voluntary leadership, provides support to import and export businesses.
In the last four years he has been focused on Somali communities – helping them with start-ups through advice, counselling and business planning.
He said: “I came to the UK in 1983 with plans to study and return to Nigeria, but then I was offered a position in business development and it became my life pursuit.”
He added: “I am passionate about my community and about making a difference. I never expected an honour, but it means a lot to me.”
Fubara has been praised for his active support of the growth agenda in the South West and his invaluable input and positive contributions to the benefit of BME people, businesses and organisations in Somerset.
He said: “Sometimes people pass me on the street and tell me thanks for helping them and that gives me a real sense of satisfaction.
“I may not always be able to help financially but I think that what BME businesses need the most is mentorship. A good mentor can make a businesses and a bad mentor can break a business.”
