The Lagos State government has threatened to demolish no fewer than 1,800 defective buildings it sealed off across the Lagos metropolis to avert imminent their collapse.

The General Manager,   Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Mrs. Abimbola Animashaun, who disclosed this to journalists, said the move became necessary to prevent the needless loss of life and property associated with the collapse of buildings.

Animashaun said: “We have sealed about 1,800 properties and there is no one to come and claim them. The owners are not forthcoming and if there is no one to claim them, it means we have the right to go and remove them.

“People should come to LASBCA, no matter the situation, to get advice. Some of them have removed our seals and they are going to be prosecuted.”

Speaking on the defective two-storey building demolished on Freeman Street which had about 36 rooms, she explained that the building was brought down after it failed an integrity test conducted by the agency on it.

LASBCA boss said the occupants of the building were notified about the demolition exercise, even as he counseled owners of other sealed buildings in the metropolis to immediately proceed to the agency’s office to learn about government next line of action.
