Mr. Yomi Bolarinwa, Director General, National Broadcasting Commission , and his counterparts from commonwealth countries are set to debate the regulatory and technology implications of digital television migration as nations get set to move from analogue to digital television broadcasting.
Bolarinwa, who is leading Nigeria’s quest to migrate to the digital TV broadcasting in line with the mandate of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU),will take the stage at the Commonwealth Telecommunications’ 7th Annual Digital Broadcasting Switchover Forum (DBSF) 2012 in South Africa from February 22 to 24.
According to the ITU, the migration from analogue to digital TV broadcasting will create space for mobile telecommunications operators to utilise the vast spectrum that would be unleashed by the migration for rapid deployment of broadband services in rural areas.
The conference will examine among other issues the tradeoffs between DVB and DVB-T2 for the emerging Commonwealth countries and how regulatory standards impact commercial decisions. Among other issues to be debated are between horinzontal and vertical market structures which best serves the consumer?
The meeting will equip broadcasters, policy-makers, broadcast regulators and programmers for the complex and extensive preparations required to ensure a smooth transition from analogue to digital television broadcasting.
The NBC DG and Mallam Usman Magawata, DG, Nigerian Television Authority, will be joined by national broadcasting stations and regulators from South Africa, Tanzania, Namibia and Mauritius, amongst others.
