Trafalgar Square Christmas Tree and Carols

41 Views Comment Off

About the event: Every year Trafalgar Square sprouts a wonderfully large Christmas Tree – a gift each year from the people of Norway as a thank you for support and friendship during World War Two – and this is a focus of the Christmas season in central London. Always a superb, giant pine tree, the Christmas Tree in Trafalgar Square sports a really wonderful Christmas light display.

The lights on the Christmas Tree will be turned on Thursday 1st December at 6.30pm and the lights then remain on from midday until midnight every day throughout the Christmas season. The ceremony of turning on the lights is preceded by a carol service at St Martin-in-the-Fields. The tree itself remains there, of course, until Twelfth Night – 6th January 2012.

The enormous tree is a popular seasonal tourist attraction, particularly in the fortnight leading up to Christmas, when each evening from Monday 5 December to Thursday 22 December 2011, between 5pm and 9pm, a different choir gathers there to sing carols and raise money for a range of voluntary or charitable organisations.
