A leaked photo, originally published by the Verge, depicts an all touch screen device surrounded by a black frame and capped with silver ends. The London reportedly features a 1.5-gigahertz dual-core processor, an 8-megapixel camera, 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera and 16-gigabytes of onboard storage.

RIM has not confirmed the photo, and it may be a clever mock-up done using Photoshop, but reports of the device demonstrate the pressure RIM’s promised BBX is under to turn the company around.

The BlackBerry London is reportedly slated to be the company’s first BBX-based smartphone after the BlackBerry Colt was scrapped by RIM earlier this year.

The London would be RIM’s boldest design of a smartphone yet and if it runs a stellar OS, the combination may be one way to bolster the company’s flagging market share. Sales of BlackBerry OS 7 devices have been disappointing and the company has continued to garner criticism from analysts and investors that are unhappy with its creative direction.

A bold design change along with revamped software may be what RIM needs to jump start falling sales and regain consumer interest, but even if rumors about the new device are true, the company still faces several challenges. RIM has so far not been able to get its native email to work on BBX software in testing, devices running the platform will likely start off with poor mobile app availability and the London isn’t expected to arrive until the third quarter of 2012.

This alleged new BlackBerry device could have potential, but it still may end up being a case of too little, too late for RIM, a company that has been talking up new products a lot lately, but not delivering on them very quickly.
