Nigeria sends 499 former militants on vocational training abroad

LAGOS, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) — A total of 449 former militants from Nigeria’s Niger Delta region have left for vocational training overseas under the government’s amnesty program.

The batch which left Thursday for South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, Malaysia and India brought to 1,356 the total number of former militants that have been sent abroad for skills acquisition program.

The former militants would receive training in under sea welding, crane operations, deep sea diving, auto mechanics as well as electrical installation and electronic maintenance.

Addressing the group in Lagos before their departure, Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta Matters Kingsley Kuku promised that the amnesty office would negotiate job placement on completion of their program.

Kuku added that the Federal Government remains committed to the success of the post amnesty program.

He urged the group to exhibit good conduct, stressing that their conduct abroad is key to the success of the amnesty program.

“I urge you not to disappoint President Goodluck Jonathan for the confidence he reposed in you as he is committed to ensuring that this program is successful,” he added.

He urged them to be of good behavior, affirming that the days of protesting over mundane matters are over.
